Rust

Surviving in harsh and unfair world

Rust is a multiplayer-only survival video game developed by Facepunch Studios. Rust was first released in early access in December 2013 and received its full release in February 2018.

In rust you gather resources to survive in the wilderness. The primary threat to your survival is other players. Almost everybody will hunt you for your loot. So, you too make your own weapons and shelter to defend yourself against others. You begin with a rock. You gather wood and stone to make new tools and primitive guns like bows and spears. As you adventure through the massive map with many threatening players you will encounter barrels and crates that have loot inside. In these, you will find scraps and blueprints to advance your crafting recipes.

Rust gameplay

Having a shelter is very important in Rust. You need a safe place where you can smelt ores, craft stuff and stay offline. If you don’t have a shelter when you logoff, you will probably find yourself dead next day and losing your whole inventory. But know that your shelter isn’t impenetrable. Other players probably want to loot your entire base. For that they will bring lots of C4s and rockets. So even your shelter is not a long solution to secure your loot. In the future you might as well raid other’s bases too.

Rust has changed a lot. It used to be more like a survival game but now it kind of got its own genre for its gameplay. I used to like the earlier versions of Rust more. Now game turned into a clan based PvP, open world, base builder game.

Rust base

Base raidings takes long time and requires luck and mostly forward thinking. You need to find the treasure room without wasting too much explosives. And there is a probability that loot you find might not be great.

Game looks good but when player vs player combat is the main gameplay, you just have to decrease it to get a huge advantage on visibility. So, game starts looking like potato with zero grass. If you try to play with max settings you will be probably get killed easily without even knowing where the enemy is.

Gameplay is mostly solid. Much less bullshitery and more into skill and loot based pvp. Of course, better guns makes pvp much easier but guns come at a price. Each bullet costs your resources so maybe using crossbow and bow are much safer choice.

Because game is multiplayer only there is a %50 chance you will spawn in the night. Its impossible to spot anything. You’ll just have to wait until it becomes day again which makes the first impressions very poor for a new comer.

There is no character customization in the game. You have to play however game decides to how you look like in game. I again whats the reason behind that. Maybe for more realism ?

Rust's player base is very toxic. For some reason, lots of players kills new players who are just beginned and naked, trying to play while a random guy with an crossbow kills him. I don't know what they gain for killing beginners but it makes it hard for newbies.

Progression in this game is why I don’t like it. If you are a solo player, you don’t have any chance. Almost every person who is playing this game has a big clan or friends to play with. Every time, you get destroyed by a try-hard players who played so long that they are mastered the bow and will headshot you 1 km away. They wander around in groups killing and raiding everyone. Because they can, why wouldn’t they? You know what they do to stop a few big clans ruling the whole server, they wipe the server every two week. Imagine looting players for whole week and being the best on the server and server gets wiped so all of your efforts goes to waste. This is why I don’t understand why people like this game. Even with friends it becomes a frustrating pvp mess. You either hunt or get hunted. But in the end, it doesn’t even matter.

Rust is coming to consoles

This game isn’t for casual and solo players. This game ONLY could be fun with more than 2 friends to play with for long hours of the day. If you think playing for hours sounds extreme or you don’t have friends to play with, don’t buy it.

Rust is very hard to recommend. If you want to waste time with friends, pvp-ing and building a base; this might be a great game for you. Though not everyone probably going to find it fun to play.

Score 6 out of 10

Looks unique and good

Unfair pvp but when its fair its very well balanced and its about skill.

Game is all about multiplayer so it has infinite amounts of replayability. But because of unfair environment it gets boring.

PROS / CONS

  • A big map with lots of places to loot and visit.
  • Only being able to play on multiplayer servers
  • Unfairness and harsh environment
