Flynn: Son of Crimson is a platform game, which is quite surprising in an era dominated by Metroidvania games, with a story about a young chosen one destined to save the world, will it be a game like the rest, or does it have something more to offer?
Rosantica and little bit more
The game introduces us to Flynn, the son of two important characters, and therefore he has the destiny to save *his* world, and yes, there is another world, but it is only mentioned and we will never see it. Our dog Dex accompanies us on this adventure, although at first we must save him first. As you can see, the story is nothing new, and very little is explored beyond what is necessary for the game to move forward.
As we progress, we will encounter new biomes—with pretty good artwork—that add new mechanics to the platforming.
Fighting and a little bit more
Since the game is an action platformer, we will mainly have fights, and the character's movement is quite fluid, so the gameplay is enjoyable, but the difficulty is low, even at a high level. Even so, we have different weapons and elemental attacks to suit your style, which will be necessary in certain situations. What's more, later on we will have a berserker bar that will make the game even easier.
On the exploration side, we can search for some collectibles (barely hidden) and alternate exits with arenas to obtain Crimson (currency to improve our character).
As an added bonus, we can also ride Dex in some fast platforming sections.
Worth?
Overall, Flynn: Son of Crimson it's a decent game that evokes the days of SNES, with smooth gameplay, but a short duration. If you're looking for something other than metroidvanias or a game to relax with, this is a good option. It will take you 8 hours to complete 100%.
