Right away, Tandem: A Tale of Shadows grabbed me with its puzzle platforming. It kept me interested the whole time I played. If I were giving scores, here’s my breakdown:
Art & Visuals – 9/10
The game looks amazing. Think dark fairy tale meets Tim Burton – creepy but in a cool way. The color scheme together with the soft shadows, and the moving settings, makes the whole thing so nice that one cannot help but get lost in it. Each level feels like stepping into a painting, and I liked how the visuals fit the tone. The character designs, like Fenton the teddy bear, are strange and fit well within the game's mood. I stopped a bunch of times just to look around; it's that good.
Gameplay & Mechanics – 8/10
The gameplay is what makes Tandem special. You play as both Emma and Fenton, switching between them. Emma walks on the ground, and Fenton walks on shadows—it’s a cool idea! Puzzles ranged from smart optical illusions to platforming ones that had to be done at the right moment and with perfect teamwork. It is an intelligent and well-thought-out system though some of the later puzzles did come out as very hard, needing a lot of patience and trouble and error.
Story & Atmosphere – 7/10
The plot is a little thin but nonetheless powerful. It is a mysterious story of a family home and a lost kid, with a dark, gothic mood that kept me up. The story is told slowly and in spite of its shallow nature, the eerie atmosphere and the ghostly score kept me interested. I would say it is more about mood and environment than storytelling depth, and that suited me just fine.
Difficulty & Puzzles – 8/10
The game has a good challenge balance. A few puzzles made me wonder for a bit but none of them felt impossible. It is just right for players who are into brain teasers without the frustration of being frustrated. The difficulty has an even rise and I liked that each chapter brings new tricks, thus keeping the game lively. Some puzzles could use a hint or two, but it feels good when you beat them.
Length & Content – 7/10
I would say the game has a good content offering with five chapters and approximately 45 levels. It took me around 8-10 hours to complete which I found just right for a puzzle adventure. The levels are diverse in terms of their ideas and a lot of fun to explore every nook and cranny of the mansion. The game is not too lengthy but just enough to feel done and to get the reward of it.
Overall Experience – 8/10
“Tandem: A Tale of Shadows” looks great, has cool gameplay, and makes you think. It is for the players who like to think while solving puzzles, a dark fairy-tale world, and an exclusive shadow-based gameplay. The story may not be the center of attention, but the mood and visual style certainly do compensate for it. I would highly recommend it, especially if you get it during a sale, if you like atmospheric puzzle adventures.
Final Verdict:
8/10 – A pretty game with fun puzzles. Worth playing!
