"Satellite Reign" - First Impressions
In the case of any one who is a fan of the classic syndicate-style strategy games and cyberpunk scenarios, the introduction of Satellite Reign would be a pleasant experience. Right from the beginning, it seemed like a contemporary homage to Syndicate Wars, with a meticulously created dystopian city and tactics that had really ensnared me. Below is my brief review on the subject:
Gameplay & Mechanics: 8/10
The key mechanics are fun. It takes tactical vision and collaboration of many agents, in the first hours of the game, you are having fun and your getting a rewarding curve of introduction to the game, but as the game progresses, it difficulty ramps up exponentially and some players may find it frustrating. There is enough management of both agents and resources to keep the game feeling fresh, though it requires patience and a careful strategy.
Graphics & Design: 9/10
The use of contemporary graphics to depict the desolate and brightly-lit city is magical. All the areas have their own characters and are so lively that the detail in them will not be missed by the fans of cyberpunk.
Sound & Music: 7/10
The soundtrack fits the dark atmosphere very well, it has a tense feeling, however, some variety would be much more welcomed. Sound effects are good, which also blends in pretty well.
Difficulty & Balance: 7/10
The early game is accessible and fun, but the scaling difficulty can turn it into a grind, which might deter some players from finishing. Be prepared for a tough challenge as you advance.
Overall Score: 8/10
As someone who appreciates the classic syndicate strategy games I have been looking forward to Satellite Reign. This game is a generous tribute the the classic Syndicate Wars of an earlier time, in a cyberpunk dystopia, looking lovely with wonderful detail. The game is presented in a top down isometric view, offering excellent radial detail and tactical perspective-more specifically, I took advantage of the option to switch to multiplayer design as well.
Overall, Satellite Reign is a masterpiece for both classic strategy and cyberpunk lovers. It has the old-school tactics feel with a modern shine, albeit at times it can be very stressful in the late game. A must try if you like the strategic and dystopian environments!
