Here’s my take on OPUS: Rocket of Whispers
To begin with, I must admit that "OPUS: Rocket of Whispers" was a true revelation for me. The game is more like a love story told through simple yeah polite gameplay. I'd say it's an 8.5 out of 10 overall.
Story and Atmosphere (9/10):
The story is super emotional, and really pulls you in. You play as John, one of the few survived after a bad sickness. You work with Fei, a young witch, to construct a rocket that sends dead people's spirits back to space. The story unfolds nicely through calm talk and great visuals. I liked that they didn't spell everything out, letting you think and feel. It’s sad but hopeful, and I cared a lot about their mission and the spirit’s stories.
Graphics and Sound (8.5/10):
The game looks great with soft, artistic visuals that match the sad story. The world is icy and grabs your attention. The music is quiet but does the job, helping the mood without being too loud. It's the kind of music that gets to you quietly, making moments feel even more touching.
Gameplay and Mechanics (8/10):
Gameplay is generally just controlling your character wandering around, looking for stuff, and using those stuff to build parts for the rocket. I have to say the game is more story-driven than action-packed which fits very well with the tone of the game. There is no hurry in the game; no timer which I liked, allowing me to explore by myself slowly but surely. Still, I wish there was a run option—walking all the time can be a bit slow especially when you are looking for that last item. The map opens up later which does help in navigating around, but in the beginning, you mainly rely on your memory to explore.
User Interface and Controls (7.5/10):
The controls are easy, and surprisingly, a controller works great. The layout is simple, which is good, but a map from the start would be better.
Value and Replayability (8/10):
My game lasted about 4 hours. I felt it was worth the cost. You might not play it a lot since it is mostly story, but it is important and I am happy I played it. If you like stories with feeling, try this game.
Final thoughts:
OPUS: Rocket of Whispers is an emotional experience. It makes up for being a simple game with great storytelling and art. I highly recommend it for anyone who is after a quiet and reflective adventure.
