Moonlighter - My Honest Review

Visuals & Art: 9/10
I always loved pixel art, the art and colors used is gorgeous and it makes a very nice world that visually kept me addicted. The character designs are really great and you can definitely see the artists put a lot of love into the tiny little details, the animations and visual effects are also very smooth and impressive.

Gameplay & Combat: 5/10

Gameplay is repetitive. Fighting is awkward, especially because of hitboxes that don't respond, and the bosses are often too simple to make reactions feel like a good challenge. The use of different weapons is not balanced, and the different dungeons are not very different from one another leading and eventually to boredom.

Story & Dialogue: 4/10

The story is very weak and the conversations are uninteresting. It does not bring much to the story or the characters that would keep me reading and hence engaged in the long run.

Sound & Music: 8/10

The game's music is soothing and perfectly matches the game's mood, even though it is quite simple it does enhance the experience.

UI & Controls: 6/10

There were bugs in the interface that I had to deal with, especially when interaction prompts were not showing up. When using the controller sometimes the actions would trigger unexpected responses, for instance, drinking potions while opening chests, and this would interrupt the flow of the game.

Overall: 6/10

Moonlighter is a lovely little game that will charm you and keep you entertained for a while, but it soon start showing signs of being repetitive and grindy. It was a pleasant mix of shop simulation and RPG, but it definitely needs better combat balance, more variety, and quality-of-life improvements. The art and the soundtrack are still a reason to give it a try if you love to play 'pixel-art' games that are relaxing.

Score 6 out of 10
